Abstract

SILVERIO, Maria. Swinging in Portugal: an anthropological interpretation. Etnográfica [online]. 2014, vol.18, n.3, pp.551-574. ISSN 0873-6561.

This article seeks to understand how gender and sexual identities are reproduced, re-signified or denied in swinging, highlighting what characterizes femininity and masculinity. The swingers’ notions of monogamy, infidelity and jealousy are also analyzed. The reflection is based on the experience and discourse of six Portuguese swinger couples and also on ethnography realized in a swinging club in the Lisbon area. In Portugal, there is no sociological or anthropological work about swinging, which makes this research a pioneering work.

Keywords : swinging; Portugal; conjugality; sexuality; gender.
