Abstract

ERIKSEN, Thomas Hylland. Overheating: Small places and large issues in 21st century anthropology. Etnográfica [online]. 2016, vol.20, n.1, pp.197-208. ISSN 0873-6561.

Accelerated change characterizes the present world in a number of domains, ranging from the growth of cities and the development in international tourism to telecommunications and energy use. This article argues the need for anthropologists to study local responses to these forms of change in an increasingly interconnected world. There are some fundamental contradictions in the present world, notably between ecological sustainability and economic growth, but also between the neoliberal economy and social values. In order for these tensions to be fully understood, anthropological methods are necessary - the tools of ethnography must be applied to the contemporary global system.

Keywords : change; velocity; interconnection; tension; ethnography; local/global.
