OTALVARO, Jaider Camilo et al. Child rearing in an infringed settlement: beyond institutional discourses. Etnográfica [online]. 2016, vol.20, n.2, pp.295-316. ISSN 0873-6561.

This paper presents the learning achieved in relation to child rearing and its usefulness for reflecting on education about this topic in the health sector. This is the result of a research study aimed at understanding the educational process of a governmental program of national scope which is focused on attending families with pregnant and breast-feeding women in Colombia (FAMI program). An interpretative ethnographic study was conducted through meetings, observations of educational activities and interviews. The analysis was done through the coding and categorization of texts and a group reflection process on the findings identified. FAMI mothers who are community educators of the program achieve a more productive and successful child rearing, because their involvement in the program helps them to develop a reflective child rearing, foster their human development, and to build better socioeconomic conditions to achieve the lives they have reason to value for themselves and their children. The progress accomplished by FAMI mothers in fulfilling the child rearing they appreciate becomes an important input to learn about education on child rearing, and a way to bridge the gap between the institutional or scientific-disciplinary discourse and the popular discourse, facilitating a more sensitive and relevant educational process.
