Abstract

BUENO, José Geraldo Silveira  and  PENNA, Marieta Gouvêa de Oliveira. Teaching in the prison environment: between autonomy and oppression. Etnográfica [online]. 2016, vol.20, n.2, pp.387-409. ISSN 0873-6561.

This article is the result of an investigation about the teaching practice performed by inmate monitors inside the prison environment. It was accomplished through interviews and it aims at contributing to the study of the paradoxical relationship between autonomy and critical thinking - which are intrinsic to the teaching practice - and the restrictions imposed by a social environment characterized by oppression and violence - evident in the prison environment, but not restricted to it. Based on the contributions of Bourdieu (2001a, 2001b) and having as a background the life paradox of being an inmate as well as a teacher of fellow inmates, the collected data are analyzed and inquired in three different perspectives: relationships of power in different areas of the prison; relationships of power and the school area; and the school as a place for possibilities.

Keywords : teaching practice; school/prison; violence.
