Abstract

WOLANSKI, Sandra. Transmitting experience to build organization: transmission as a relational process in an union in Buenos Aires. Etnográfica [online]. 2017, vol.21, n.3, pp.527-540. ISSN 0873-6561.

In this paper I study transmission processes of traditions and experiences in social organizations, based on an ethnographical study of the main telecommunications union in the Metropolitan Area of Buenos Aires. I argue that transmission should be understood as a relational process, framed in relations between the different generations of activists that carry out the organization. I maintain that in those processes shared narratives and collective memories are formed, and current union practices are therein understood and shaped, enabling continuation as well as renewal in these practices. I establish transmission processes as part of the activists’ own militant work which daily constructs the union. Finally, I sustain my analysis in E. P. Thompson’s perspective on class as a process in the making.

Keywords : unions; transmission; memory; generations.
