CORDEIRO, Manuela Souza Siqueira. “Spreading family”: meanings and belongings in the occupation of Brazilian Amazon. Etnográfica [online]. 2017, vol.21, n.3, pp.627-638. ISSN 0873-6561.

This paper addresses the land occupation trajectory of a colonization project in Brazil during the military dictatorship. Through the use of a family report, I will shed light on the process of land occupation in the region of the Burareiro Settlement Project (PAD), located in the state of Rondônia, Brazil. I will highlight the specific way of life of those who called themselves “pioneers” during the 1970s, responsible for the occupation and beginning of the agricultural cycle in the Western Amazon. For that, I use the narrative potential of the experiences of the scene of the families that organize the experience of occupation in three movements. These movements in “search for the new” are presented through the “spreading” category, which, when referring to family dynamics, emphasizes the centrality of the origin family. Pioneering is seen as a form of social framework, in which the search for participation in the construction of new spaces is a constitutive element of the life of the families, having different meanings.
