Abstract

SANTOS, Antonela dos. “Spirituality as a sieve”: ontological frictions among the Ranquel people. Etnográfica [online]. 2020, vol.24, n.2, pp.485-501. ISSN 0873-6561.  https://doi.org/10/4000/etnografica/9098.

I briefly analyze the links between the current process of ethnic reorganization between the Ranquel people of La Pampa (Argentina) and the intention shared by most of the Ranqueles with whom I work of recovering their “spirituality.” I state that there is not a unique way of understanding that “spirituality” and practicing it. Confronted with this ethnographic reality, which is multiple, fragmentary and permeated by various logics, I explore in this text the potential of an analytical approach that focuses on some of these divergences within the Ranquel movement considering them as ontological frictions that arise from different ways of composing the world. Finally, I conclude that taking into account the particularities of ethnographic contexts such as the Ranquel one -which differs widely from those that gave rise to the anthropological theorization of ontologies- may lead us to partially modify the mainstream theories of the so-called “Ontological Turn.”

Keywords : Ranquel people; Pampa-Patagonia; ontological pluralism; ontological conflicts; spirituality.
