Abstract

NOGUEIRA, Silvia Garcia. Timorese students in network: social ties and emotional comfort facing the loneliness of the migratory experience in Brazil and Portugal. Etnográfica [online]. 2020, vol.24, n.3, pp.577-601. ISSN 0873-6561.  https://doi.org/10.4000/etnografica.7773.

This article seeks to address the affective dimension of East Timorese academic cooperation with Portugal and Brazil, from an ethnographic perspective of students on international mobility. It focuses on a group of Timorese students in Portuguese and Brazilian universities, highlighting a feeling of loneliness (mesak) expressed by them in their migratory experience, and the means they use to deal with it. Social media is the most used resource for talking to family and making new friends.

Keywords : loneliness; Timorese students; social media.
