Abstract

GESSAGHI, Victoria. Mothers and wives: becoming a high-class woman in Argentina. Etnográfica [online]. 2022, vol.26, n.3, pp.713-733.  Epub Jan 30, 2023. ISSN 0873-6561.  https://doi.org/10.4000/etnografica.12268.

This paper describes the trajectories and formative experiences of different women of the Argentine upper class with the purpose of understanding the link between gender and social class. Based on a socio-anthropological approach, which includes in-depth interviews with women and men of this social group as well as participant observations, this paper explores the practices and representations that model and regulate the lives of women in this social group. It argues that the practices and meanings that upper-class women built show that gender representations are a field of dispute. In a historical context that has been characterized by the visibility of feminist demands, conservative discourses and practices supported by these women - in other words, the appropriation of a subordinate gender role - is part of their struggle to preserve a privileged position: that of the upper class.

Keywords : social class; formative experiences; women; gender.
