Abstract

LOPES, Carlos M.. Informal, cross-border and trans-national trade: which connections? Study case in S. Pedro market (Huambo) and in Kwanzas market and Roque Santeiro market (Luanda). Economia Global e Gestão [online]. 2007, vol.12, n.3, pp.35-55. ISSN 0873-7444.

This article is the result of the research conducted in three Angolan markets, with special attention to the Luanda-Huambo line of investigation within the scope of «Angola in Movement» Project. The research was focused on the production and analysis of empirical data that came as a result of the application of the World Bank survey, adapted by the project researchers.  The results lead to the conclusion that there is a strong connection between local informal trade, inter-provincial trade, and trans-national informal trade. The connection between local informal trade and cross-border trade is less significant. The data demonstrate that tradesmen don’t trust each other. Their family and their religious group are the only ones that deserve to be trusted.  Family members are the most reliable ones and provide the main support when it comes to start business.

Keywords : Informal Trade; Informal Cross-Border Trade; Informal Trans-national Trade; Commercial Networks; Social Capital.
