SILVA, Jorge Tavares da  e  BREDA, Zélia. The Chinese dragon and the Indian elephant: Traces of similarity and divergence in the processes of opening up and economic reform. Economia Global e Gestão [online]. 2009, vol.14, n.1, pp.23-39. ISSN 0873-7444.

One of the main traces of the global economy at the beginning of the new century is the shift of focus of worldwide economic growth from the West to the East, being driven to a large extent by the Chinese and the Indian economic resurgence. Their transitional processes, characterized by greater trade openness and structural changes, boosted the gradual integration of these countries into the international economic system. However, it should be noted that given the distinct nature of each market, in addition to specific historical development paths and cultural features, they present different business environments. This paper addresses the main differences and similarities of the two transitional processes of opening up and economic reform, in order to better understand the nature of these markets highly targeted by international investors, in what is already considered to be the “Asian century”.
