Abstract

PEREIRA, João Victor Inácio. Sustainability: different perspectives, a common aim. Economia Global e Gestão [online]. 2009, vol.14, n.1, pp.115-126. ISSN 0873-7444.

Awareness of environmental problems and their origins is clearly a necessity. Fundamental aspects such as pollution, loss of biodiversity and global warming are effects of the current development model. At first this article describes the historical context and the conceptual basis of sustainable development and then further discusses the responsibility of developed and developing countries in the process of change towards sustainability. While developing countries have problems such as unprecedented population growth and lack of technology to explore natural resources efficiently, developed countries consume these resources excessively because of their way of life. In conclusion, despite the social, environmental and economic differences between countries, together, they have to find solutions for a common aim: sustainability.

Keywords : Sustainability; Developed and Developing Countries.
