Abstract

ZILBER, Silvia Novaes  and  PAJARES, Fernando M. Roncal. Banks competitive advantage analysis in emerging countries and in developed countries using the resource based view model: comparative study Brazil x USA. Economia Global e Gestão [online]. 2009, vol.14, n.2, pp.95-117. ISSN 0873-7444.

The aim of this work is to identify and to measure the competitive advantage of commercial banks in a comparative study between Brazil and the United States, using some financial indicators of performance and the RBV (Resource Based View) theory as reference. To this, a study with some of the main Brazilian and American commercial banks 2008 was carried through between the years of 2003 and the 2008.The generic strategies typology proposals for Wernerfelt (1984), Barney (1991, 1996) and the work carried through for Harvey (2004) was used. In this way, financial indicators from the thirty bigger Brazilian and American commercial banks, classified for its volume of asset, had been calculated (ROA, ROE and Operational Efficiency), under the view of the RBV. The study involved descriptive quantitative analysis using secondary data, collected mainly from regulatory agencies of the two countries (FED/SEC-USA and BACEN/CVM-Brazil). The results indicate strongly that the financial performance of the Brazilian banks is better in relation to the American banks. In such a way, the Brazilian banks possess an important competitive advantage in relation to the American banks.
