Abstract

DOWBOR, Ladislai. The need for publishing: the professor’s dilemma. Economia Global e Gestão [online]. 2011, vol.16, n.3, pp.9-23. ISSN 0873-7444.

The world was simple. Professors and researchers used to write their papers, publishers put them on real paper and sold them, and the money they got made the science go around. Today we have on one side an elite of places where we have to publish, and publishing houses which charge absurd amounts for every paper we buy the access to. And they know that a professor’s reputation depends on publishing in a noble scientific environment. There is no way around the tollbooth. But, on the other hand, the new technologies have opened a myriad of different solutions, not only to publish without waiting for years, but to have immediate comments from fellow scientists around the world. There is a clear tension being built between the two worlds, the tollbooth and open access, and much moralistic discourse. Going beyond ideology and fundamentalism, we have here tried to put down what is working.
