Abstract

FRANGI, Lorenzo. Varieties of capitalism and human resource management: The case of Brazilian subsidiaries of three multinational corporations. Economia Global e Gestão [online]. 2012, vol.17, n.1, pp.83-102. ISSN 0873-7444.

The relevance of institutions for the economic dynamics is highlighted, and the varieties of capitalism (VoC) is assumed, and the hierarchical variety of capitalism (to which Brazil belongs) is explored. Afterwards, an own analytical model to study the human resource management (HRM) practices inside firms is developed. In the VoC model the workers’ protagonism is included and a focus is devoted to the most important institutional subsystems: industrial relations and education system. The influence of these institutional areas in the most relevant HRMpractices - recruitment, training and compensation politics - is analysed in the Brazilian subsidiaries of three multinational corporations. This study provides not only an innovative model to analyse HRM practices in subsidiaries - linking different scientific literatures, as the sociological and HRM ones - but also its empirical application.

Keywords : Institutions; Varieties of Capitalism; Multinational Corporations; Human Resource Management.
