DOWBOR, Ladislau. The corruption trails: a systemic view. Economia Global e Gestão [online]. 2012, vol.17, n.3, pp.77-105. ISSN 0873-7444.

In spite of its obvious success, the Brazilian progressive regime has been facing an impressive attack by the traditional oligarchy, supported by the four media giants and a segment of the Judiciary. Overthrowing governments is not a forgotten tradition in Latin America, and the recent coups in Venezuela (reverted), Honduras and Paraguay show that destabilization can be reached without generals. Argentina is reaching a tipping point. In the Brazilian case, the right-wing movement raised the virtuous flag of morality - a coffee-party of sorts, - in the name of clean politics. Political and economic interests apart, this movement navigates on the huge ignorance people have of how corruption works. This allows various manipulations of who the culprits are, preferably on the left. In this paper, we made a simple exercise of showing the main mechanisms of corruption, the nuts and bolts of election funding, use of public debt, support of the financial corporations, budget muddling, and of course the fiscal havens which allow the illegal money to be kept safe, in secret and well managed, an oasis for the happy few. This goes far beyond illegal money, since it deforms the democratic process itself. We are basically studying the Brazilian case here, but the tale concerns us all.
