Abstract

MARTINS, Regina Maria da Conceição Santos  and  MARTINS, José Carlos Amado. Experiences of nurses during the transfer of critical patients from one hospital to another. Rev. Enf. Ref. [online]. 2010, vol.serIII, n.2, pp.111-120. ISSN 0874-0283.

The present paper focuses on the experiences of nurses during the transfer of critical patients from one hospital to another. The concern in understanding the feelings of the nurses represented a challenge because experiences and feelings were going to be told. A qualitative study with a phenomenological approach was developed since it was considered the most adequate for this study because it allows the interpretation and understanding of the phenomenon in study through the attribution of meaning to the experiences. The participants were seven nurses from an hospital of the centre of the country. The data were collected between February and March, 2009, through semi-structured interviews recorded on tape. After the identification of the units of meaning from experience, the meaning was clarified relating the constituents with each other and with the whole, according to the language of the interviewed. From the Presented the findings emerged three main themes: the striking positive experiences, the striking negative experiences and the influences of the inter-hospital transfers. In the discussion of the findings, the opinion of the participants was confronted with cited authors, which showed that the nurses’ opinions were the same as the authors’.
