The aim of this study was to understand the expectations of nurses working in the medical-surgical units of a university hospital relating to the pilot test of an electronic system aimed at the documentation of nursing. Ten nurses participating in theoretical-practical training to use the electronic system were interviewed, and data were analyzed using content analysis. Nurses expressed expectations that the computerization of documentation would lead to more visibility of their clinical reasoning and support decisionmaking in relation to the diagnoses, outcomes and nursing interventions most appropriate for each patient. For these nurses, the challenge of computerization of documentation was met with optimism, because they also expected that the electronic system would decrease the time spent on documentation and improve the quality of information recorded during patients hospitalization. The nurses in the study are important agents in the institutional transformation of the situation. Given the need to implement change processes, it is essential that those responsible respect the values of participants and meet their expectations, because they need to change their ways of thinking, feeling and acting in order to integrate these processes and contribute to their success.
