Resumen

ESPADINHA, Antónia Maria Nicolau  y  SILVA, Maria Madalena de Castro Van Zeller Nunes da. The colostomate`s decision-making about adhering to the irrigation technique. Rev. Enf. Ref. [online]. 2011, vol.serIII, n.4, pp.89-96. ISSN 0874-0283.

The colostomate faces many problems related to faecal incontinence and the consequent need to use a pouch. We are aware that the irrigation technique can be a solution for those problems. With the goal of identifying and analyzing the factors that influence the choice to adhere or not to the irrigation technique, we decided to carry out an exploratory descriptive study with a quantitative approach. Data collection was conducted through a questionnaire and data were subjected to thematic and statistical analysis. The sample included 80 colostomists. Major findings of this study emphasize the identification of seven factors most commonly reported by respondents as being the ones that interfere with the choice of practicing the irrigation technique as well as not-practising it. The sample included 80 participants with colostomy. An additional finding was that the nurse is the health professional who gives more information about irrigation technique.

Palabras clave : colostomate; irrigation; decision making; influence factors.
