Abstract

DOMINGOS, Manuel C. R.. A neuropsychological approach of schizophrenia. Psicologia [online]. 2000, vol.14, n.1, pp.25-29. ISSN 0874-2049.

Schizophrenia has a neuropathological basis, compromising the brain in an apparent diffuse way, involving several cerebral areas and causing several neuropsychological, behavioural and personality disfunctions. This setting seems to be the main kind of disturbances found in schizophrenic patients. In this introductory approach of the neuropsychological aspects of schizophrenia we intend to enumerate the main complex nervous activity disturbances frequently present in the disease, correlating them with the cerebral areas thought to be involved in the pathological process. On the other hand, and besides focusing some neurochemistry aspects of schizophrenia, we will refer the possible effects of pharmacological therapy on the cognitive and behavioural performances as well.

Keywords : Esquizofrenia; alterações neuropsicopatológicas; alterações anatomofuncionais; disfunções neuroquímicas.
