Abstract

REIS, Filipe Damas dos et al. Expressed Emotion of Schizophrenic Families and the Patients Relapse. Psicologia [online]. 2000, vol.14, n.1, pp.31-44. ISSN 0874-2049.

This is a replication study of schizophrenic relapse in a 12 months follow-up and the Expressed Emotion (EE) of patients' families. A sample of 53 chronic schizophrenics families was evaluated by Camberwell Family Interview (CFI). Patients are in psychiatric ambulatory treatment with neuroleptics. After interview analysis, 66% families had high EE and 34% low EE Scores of CFI scales are: critical comments 4,1 (mean), hostility was expressed in 15% of relatives and over-involvement in 23%. 37 patients' relatives are male and 41 female. Female relatives show more emotional over-involvement (37%) than male relatives (8%). Follow-up relapse rate is 57% for patients living in high EE families and 17% for patients living in low EE families. Comparing data of different studies, made in different countries, our study, as well as a Spanish one, has lower criticism than English studies. In spite of this EE cultural dimension results agree with the general conclusion that patients relapse rate is greater in those who live in high EE families than in low EE families.
