This text tries to accomplish three aims. Firstly, to present the story and aims of the project that originated the texts presented in this volume of PSICOLOGIA - the project "O descobrimento do Brasil 500 anos depois: memória social e representações dos portugueses e brasileiros“ The discovery of Brazil 500 years latter: social memory and representations of Portuguese and Brazilians”. Secondly, to propose briefly the framework that underlies this project - the analysis of the relations between social representations and social memory. Finally, to sketch a summary of the contributions to this volume, as well as their general conclusions.
