Abstract

AREOSA, Virginia Coutinho  and  BULLA, Leonia Capaverde. Human aging and the new familiar configurations: The old person as a supplier. Psicologia [online]. 2010, vol.24, n.1, pp.161-171. ISSN 0874-2049.

The current trend of increasing the number of people aged over 60 years, a phenomenon known as aging population, has transformed the profile of Brazilian families. Generally, the elderly were seen as dependent beings, but in recent years, this trend is changing and a new reality is emerging. To understand the changes that are occurring within families and their relationship with the aging population, some variables that were part of a qualitative search were analysed and are now brought for discussion in this article. This research has cut out the “old provider” that through the benefit from social security (retirement and pensions) is the keeper of the family in a medium-sized city of Rio Grande do Sul. The results point to an old age profile that is heterogeneous, with marked differences in relation to gender and new family arrangements that were derived from the economic issue.

Keywords : human aging; family settings; old provider.
