Abstract

MACEDO, Eunice  and  SANTOS, Sofia. Just Women? The situation of women in the labour market in four European countries. Ex aequo [online]. 2009, n.19, pp.129-155. ISSN 0874-5560.

This article aims at contributing to the discussion of women’s situation in the labour market in four state members of the European Union - Portugal, Lithuania, Belgium and the Netherlands. In face of the country’s realities, if on the one hand the problem at stake builds on group perceptions about women’s location in the diverse fields of each country’s social life, on the other hand, it stands on collective critical comparative analysis of each country’s social policies. We try to focus women’s possibilities to have access and to succeed in the labour market together with their set locations in the care private space. We use a comparative mode to account for states and Europe attempts to improve feminine enclosure through the attribution of social benefits to women and their families. Continuities and differences among states are also emphasised within its diverse location in the European context, in a time of globalisation, when phenomena such as job scarcity, among others, put at risk great blocs of the world-wide population.

Keywords : women; work market; social policies; private sphere; public sphere; citizenship.
