Resumen

FURTADO, Teresa. «Masculine» personae in women’s video art. Ex aequo [online]. 2009, n.20, pp.65-79. ISSN 0874-5560.

Starting from a feminist perspective and based on a deconstructive methodology, this article examines the way in which different European and North American video artists incorporated «masculinities» into their art. In the 70's, within the context of video art and performance, women artists experienced different personae and cultural role-playing ascribed to gender based on the masculine/feminine dichotomy. In the 80's, artists from the previous decade were rejected as «essentialists» by feminist theoreticians. From the mid 80's up to the present we witness a resurgence of parody, pleasure and the body, mainly in young lesbian artists' videos, which don't place themselves outside the margins of the social fabric but confidently assert their alterity feeling no need to validate their gender identity while completely integrated in the social framework.

Palabras clave : Feminism; video art; personae; masculinities; transgression.
