Abstract
MOZZICONACCI, Vanina. Girls or boys: who is not well-brought-up?. Ex aequo [online]. 2011, n.23, pp.149-162. ISSN 0874-5560.
Writing 60 years apart from each other, Madeleine Pelletier (The Feminist Education of Girls, 1914) and Elena Gianini Belotti (What Are Little Girls Made Of?, 1973), two of the few feminist authors to explicitly discuss the raising of children, appear to propose one and the same solution for achieving a more egalitarian socialization: masculinize the girls. Does this mean that feminists regard the values hitherto inculcated in young girls as inferior to those instilled in boys? Or is it simply more difficult to change the way in which we raise boys? This article examines how contemporary feminist theories can inform a new approach to education.
Keywords : feminist theories of education; gendered socialization; masculinization.
