Abstract

REGO, Maria do Céu da Cunha. Gender equality policies in the European Union and in Portugal: Influences and Inconsistencies. Ex aequo [online]. 2012, n.25, pp.29-44. ISSN 0874-5560.

The text aims to highlight the reciprocal influence in Portugal and the European Union of public policies in the field of gender equality, by analyzing two examples: on the one hand, the «Equality Act» and the European Employment Strategy, on the other, the European Union Council Resolution on reconciling work and family life. It analyzes the improvements that the Treaty of Lisbon has brought to this area in contrast to some recent instruments of European Union policy - «A Women’s Charter», the Strategy for equality between women and men, the European Pact for gender equality - to conclude by considering that gender equality can only be achieved with interventions of the public policies aimed also to men.

Keywords : Gender equality; law; public policies; men.
