Abstract

MOTTA, Alda Britto da. Women between Caring For The Elderly And For The Youngsters. Ex aequo [online]. 2012, n.26, pp.87-101. ISSN 0874-5560.

The great transformations found today in the structure of families, are due, in great part, to important changes in the sphere of gender relations but also to the process of increasing longevity, which is implicating new patterns of relations between generations, reconfiguring them around the simultaneous co-existence. This means, the presence of the aged supervised or cared for people of a mature generation, referred as intermediary or pivot, because they also support or care for the youngster in the family, due to unemployment or their very young age. The «mature» are generally women who experience minor rebellions, clear or masked conflicts and ambiguous renouncing, relations that are difficult to negotiate, as they constitute a reinforcement of traditional gender and generation roles, as caretakers.

Keywords : gender; longevity; ageing; generation «pivot»; intergenerational relations.
