Abstract

GOELLNER, Silvana Vilodre; JAEGER, Angelita Alice  and  FIGUEIRA, Márcia Luiza Machado. Invisibility does not mean absence: images of women in reference works on skateboarding and body building in Brazil. Ex aequo [online]. 2012, n.26, pp.135-148. ISSN 0874-5560.

Based on Feminist and Gender Studies and adopting a Foucaultian post-structuralist approach, this text analyzes the low visibility that women have been afforded in two works considered to be fundamental references in two sports that have been culturally represented as male domains: skateboarding and body building. When we analized these works with documents from different natures we could identify how deeply power relations and gender distinctions are within the world of sport, producing differentiated subject positions for male and female athletes and focusing the spotlights on men while leaving women’s images to fade.

Keywords : women; sport; visibility.
