Abstract

VILLAS-BOAS, Susana; OLIVEIRA, Catarina Sales  and  HERAS, Soledad Las. Domestic tasks and gender: social representations of higher education students. Ex aequo [online]. 2014, n.30, pp.113-129. ISSN 0874-5560.

Despite the important changes of Portuguese professional gender roles of the recent decades, an equivalent effect on the organization of domestic life hasn't occurred. Gender inequalities in the domestic space are still common in Portuguese society. This article is based on the idea that to understand the effect of generational change in this situation can bring us important information to better understand this. Therefore the purpose of this research is to analyze the social representations of gender in university students in the context of their domestic tasks practices and also to understand in what measure is the young generation willing to reproduce the model in which they were socialized. The results allow us to say that there is a strong trend of continuity among students but the girls are more willing and prepared for the change.

Keywords : gender; attitudes; equality; domestic realm; higher education students.
