Abstract

ONTIVERO, Lionel S. Delgado. Are Young People the Root of the Rise of Misogyny in Spain? Biases and problems in the media coverage of the Manosphere and Spanish anti-feminism. Ex aequo [online]. 2023, n.48, pp.69-85. ISSN 0874-5560.  https://doi.org/10.22355/exaequo.2023.48.06.

In recent years, the debates surrounding the rise of anti-feminism in Spain have pointed to youth as the focus of the problem. Many media have echoed reports on youth values and beliefs to talk about machismo among young people and the anti-feminist reaction that puts Spanish equality policies at risk. However, there are a number of methodological and conceptual problems in this approach that lead the public debate to a dead end. Simplifying anti-feminism has important political consequences for both identifying the problem and preventing it. This article presents a critical reflection on these issues of focus, and points to important elements in the ongoing debate.

Keywords : Masculinity; youth; antifeminism; media; politics.
