VICENTE, Ana  e  VICENTE, Filipa Lowndes. Fora dos cânones: mulheres artistas e escritoras no Portugal de príncipios do século XX. Faces de Eva. Estudos sobre a Mulher [online]. 2015, n.33, pp.38-51. ISSN 0874-6885.

What possibilities did Portuguese women have, in the early 1900s, of dedicating themselves professionally to painting and writing? Painting and writing were accepted feminine practices, and were even encouraged among the elite, but there was a difference between doing it in the private sphere of domesticity, or in the public space - through exhibitions or publishing. With suffragism and feminism being ideas and practices which circulated trans- nationally, how did the Portuguese women who had access to writing or painting position themselves in those debates? As we shall see, not always did the access to publishing and exhibitions translate into a feminist conscience.

Palavras-chave : women; painting; writing; exhibitions; feminism.
