Abstract

SANTO, Sílvia Espírito. Representações femininas do império na primeira metade do século XX. Faces de Eva. Estudos sobre a Mulher [online]. 2015, n.34, pp.89-104. ISSN 0874-6885.

In Portugal, as in many other colonial powers, the idea of colonization was seen as a men´s issue only and this notion crossed for a long time the official discourse and colonial propaganda. Currently, as a result of a diverse provenance of works, this idea has been deconstructed and there is recognition of the role women played in the colonial system. This system of political, ideological and military domination has gained new outline, from the second half of the century XIX and continued until the last quarter of the century XX, when the independence of the Portuguese colonies ended the cycle of European colonialism. By the end of World War II, even among distinct political-ideological realities as diverse as the First Republic or the New State (Estado Novo), the idea of belonging to an Empire was almost unanimous among the Portuguese female elite. This symbolic construction took on various forms of expression and lasted for much of the century XX.

Keywords : female/feminine/women; metropolis; empire; colonialism; colonial propaganda.
