Abstract

SEQUEIRA, Ágata Dourado. Women who paint in the city: Gender perceptions in urban art. Faces de Eva. Estudos sobre a Mulher [online]. 2018, n.40, pp.41-60. ISSN 0874-6885.

The aim of this article is to approach the feminine presence in what are very masculine creative realms, such as graffiti and street art, as well as the strategies these women use for recognition, visibility, and also to reconfigure their identity. From the use of gendered marks in their work, to the creation of virtual communities of women artists, several are the strategies that these artists use in the way they position themselves in relation to their work, to construct a personal path that reconfigures subcultural referents with the new career possibilities that are being opened with the recent processes of legitimization of urban art.

Keywords : gender representations; performativity; graffiti; street art; women artists.
