This article focuses on the representation of men and women in engineering in Portugal, both at the tertiary level of education and professional practice. A key conclusion is that despite the gender imbalances and the overrepresentation of men, the adoption of the plural form (engineering fields) is the most adequate one to describe the current national context. There are domains where women outnumber men, whereas other still prevail as male-dominated areas. Gendered socialisation processes are still shaping the educational options of boys and girls, therefore constraining their career aspirations and opportunities, as well as reproducing gender-based occupational segregation.
