Abstract
NOVELLINO, Maria Salet Ferreira and TOLEDO, Maria Luíza Guerra de. Distribution of Brazilian women in the local political field (2000-2016). Faces de Eva. Estudos sobre a Mulher [online]. 2020, n.44, pp.111-135. Epub Dec 31, 2020. ISSN 0874-6885. https://doi.org/10.34619/weh0-1g12.
The purpose of this study was to verify, based upon Superior Electoral Court data, whether the hierarchical distribution of women in the political field has changed along the 21st century. For this, we carried out an analysis of the distribution of female mayor candidates in the hierarchy of the political field in the period 2000-2016. We have as theoretical framework Bourdieu’s conceptions of political field, political capital and habitus as well as the concepts of supply and demand appropriated by feminist scholars to study candidates recruitment process by political parties. We have inferred that the political field is predominantly male, in which it could be seen a gender segregation, that reinforces and maintains female candidates in lower hierarchical positions.
