Abstract

SIQUEIRA, Lígia Antunes de; MANNES, Jussara  and  SILVA, Carolina Fernandes da. Bodies to marry: Gymnastics, beauty and seduction in a magazine to Brazilian women (1930s to 1950s). Faces de Eva. Estudos sobre a Mulher [online]. 2021, n.45, pp.84-101.  Epub Nov 30, 2021. ISSN 0874-6885.  https://doi.org/https://doi.org/10.34619/4ikn-fhrt.

This study aims to understand how gymnastics was represented in the Brazilian magazine Jornal das Moças as an instrument for the acquisition of a beautiful and seductive body. 367 occurrences were found in the magazine, concentrated between the 1930s and 1950s. In this period, magazines advised to ‘keep the line’, with an emphasis on gymnastics and diets. These beauty advices were motivated by a need to conquer and keep the marriage. Therefore, we observe the reproduction of heteronormative patterns of femininity and aesthetics, using gymnastics as a tool for beauty.
