The unexpected outbreak, at global level, of the Covid-19 pandemic placed issues concerning public health at the top of the world’s political agendas. Bearing this fact in mind, this article presents Cassandra, an essay written in 1852 by Florence Nightingale (1820-1910), setting it in the context of the long Victorian age and relating it to the “female question” and The Subjection of Women (1869), by John Stuart Mill (1806-1873).
