Abstract

SILVA, Manuela Sofia da Conceição. Why do we need to keep reading New Portuguese Letters 50 years after its publication. Faces de Eva. Estudos sobre a Mulher [online]. 2022, n.48, pp.113-130.  Epub Feb 20, 2023. ISSN 0874-6885.  https://doi.org/10.34619/1ws0-cddl.

New Portuguese Letters of the “three Marias” mark 50 years (1972-2022) of relevance and pertinence of their message. The text is a progressive, subversive, and differential rewriting of the Portuguese Letters attributed to the nun of Beja, in which cloistered life due to paternal imposition, the figure of Mariana, and the epistolary discursive model are topics reinvented. The story of Mariana and Chamilly is deconstructed, serving as a motto for a markedly political-ideological and feminist purpose, and, simultaneously, it is constituted as a work of fiction whose central theme is love free and liberated from the oppression of the sexes.

Keywords : Portuguese Letters; deconstruction; love; rewriting; literary heritage.
