Abstract

ASSUNCAO, Ana Paula  and  QUEIROS, Margarida. Women and religious spaces in the city: A case of ‘activism’ in the Loures cemetery. Faces de Eva. Estudos sobre a Mulher [online]. 2023, n.49, pp.108-132.  Epub July 31, 2023. ISSN 0874-6885.  https://doi.org/10.34619/hz0m-mcmn.

In the historiography of cemeteries, when compared to men, women - although always present in the way they have been portrayed - have often been invisible as to the social role they had in them. This research sought to highlight the female roles regarding the materiality of cemeteries in contemporary urban context. The case study focused on the Loures Municipal Cemetery (inserted in the Lisbon Metropolitan Area), where outstanding local male figures are buried. Regarding the chapel present there is the important but almost forgotten, service provided by women in the passage of the funeral rituals of the private place from the residence to the public space of the cemetery.

Keywords : city; religious spaces; Loures cemetery; chapel; women.
