Na historiografia dos cemitérios, quando comparadas com os homens, as mulheres - embora sempre presentes na forma como têm sido retratadas - foram frequentemente invisibilizadas quanto ao papel social que neles tiveram. Esta pesquisa procurou evidenciar os papéis femininos no que concerne à materialidade dos cemitérios em contexto urbano contemporâneo. O caso de estudo incidiu no Cemitério Municipal de Loures (inserido na Área Metropolitana de Lisboa), onde se encontram sepultadas destacadas figuras masculinas locais. A propósito da capela nele existente, salienta-se o importante, mas quase esquecido, serviço prestado pelas mulheres na passagem dos rituais fúnebres do lugar privado da residência para o espaço público do cemitério.

In the historiography of cemeteries, when compared to men, women - although always present in the way they have been portrayed - have often been invisible as to the social role they had in them. This research sought to highlight the female roles regarding the materiality of cemeteries in contemporary urban context. The case study focused on the Loures Municipal Cemetery (inserted in the Lisbon Metropolitan Area), where outstanding local male figures are buried. Regarding the chapel present there is the important but almost forgotten, service provided by women in the passage of the funeral rituals of the private place from the residence to the public space of the cemetery.
