Abstract: First feature film by Cristèle Alves Meira, Alma Viva (2022) narrates the summer holidays of a child with her family in the remote region of Trás-os-Montes. An example of the transnational vitality of contemporary Portuguese cinema, the film is also inscribed in the genealogy of Portuguese women’s cinema. Establishing links between Alma Viva, Três Dias sem Deus (Bárbara Virgínia, 1946) and Máscaras (Noémia Delgado, 1976), this article examines works from different periods in the history of the cinema directed by women in Portugal. In addition, it questions the belonging of Alma Viva, a film about ghosts, with gothic influences and rooted in the natural landscape, to the new wave of global women’s cinema, discussing the place of feminism in 21st century Portuguese film.
