Abstract

ROSA, Marta Brites. O paradoxo feminino no teatro português do século XVIII. Faces de Eva. Estudos sobre a Mulher [online]. 2023, n.50, pp.177-196.  Epub Feb 21, 2024. ISSN 0874-6885.  https://doi.org/10.34619/hpw5-hfog.

Abstract: In 18th century Portugal, women were subject to interdictions that tried to erase their presence from theatre venues, for it was considered that they had a nefarious effect on the male spectator. However, they were requested on stage by the audience and were, gradually, allowed to act. This paradox led them to be the veiled part of an institutional and social practice, where they were rejected as a gender and as professionals. Unveiling that past and presenting the institutional oppression on women in the theatre activity is the aim of this article.

Keywords : Portuguese theatre history; 18th century; actresses; gender studies; oppression.
