Resumo: Em Portugal, no século XVIII, as mulheres estavam sujeitas a interdições que procuravam apagar a sua presença dos teatros, pois considerava-se que tinham um efeito nefasto sobre o espectador masculino. No entanto, eram requisitadas pelo público e foram, gradualmente, autorizadas a atuar. Este paradoxo levou-as a ser a parte velada de uma prática institucional e social, em que eram, simultaneamente, reprovadas e desejadas enquanto mulheres e enquanto profissionais. Desvendar esse passado e dar a conhecer a opressão institucional sobre as mulheres na atividade teatral é o foco deste artigo.

Abstract: In 18th century Portugal, women were subject to interdictions that tried to erase their presence from theatre venues, for it was considered that they had a nefarious effect on the male spectator. However, they were requested on stage by the audience and were, gradually, allowed to act. This paradox led them to be the veiled part of an institutional and social practice, where they were rejected as a gender and as professionals. Unveiling that past and presenting the institutional oppression on women in the theatre activity is the aim of this article.
