Abstract: In this interview-testimonio Martha María Romero Mejía, describes pivotal experiences in her life - child abandonment, sexual and psychological abuse, being a single mother, witnessing the 2018 protests against President Daniel Ortega, her name being added to the government’s “blacklist,” and surviving an odyssey to reach Costa Rica. She offers a personal optic to the 2018 crisis and context to authoritarianism, surveillance, and the economy in today’s Nicaragua. From her position as a refugee, she explains how she became a piñata artist and entrepreneur and the meaning of the word “refugee”.
