Non adherence to treatment recommendations is an important cause of adverse outcomes and high mortally rates in patients with Percutaneus Transluminal Coronary Angioplasty (PTCA). The aim of this study was to identify determinants of non adherence in patients after PTCA procedures.Two groups of patients (n=21) with different adherence behavior participated in this qualitative study. A semi- structured interview, based on the Health Belief Model (HBM) was conducted and three other dimensions were included, namely: patient knowledge about their clinical problem and tretment recomendationst; patient beliefs about their interaction with health providers; and patient beliefs about the adequacy of treatment information, given at the discharged from hospital. Differences were found between the two groups in the HBM dimensions: perceived benefits; perceived costs and self-efficacy. Adherent and non adherent patients also showed differences in their understanding of the treatment and in the way they evaluated the amount and quality of information received. Depressive humor emerged as an important determinant of non adherence. These results highlight the relevance of attending to patients believes as an important step to promote adherence.
