NUNES, Samantha; RIOS, Mino; MAGALHAES, Adsson  e  COSTA, Shirley. Anxiety, depression and coping in patients in a general hospital. Psic., Saúde & Doenças [online]. 2013, vol.14, n.3, pp.382-388. ISSN 1645-0086.

This study aimed to evaluate the presence of anxiety and depression symptoms in patients admitted in a general hospital and to investigate ways of coping most commonly used during the illness investigate the association between these variables. To obtain data, we used a Socioeconomic Questionnaire (SQ), the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HAD) and Ways of Coping (EMEP). We interviewed 141 patients hospitalized in different wards of the medical clinics; 35.46% of patients had symptoms of anxiety, 12.1% had symptoms of depression. Significant association was observed between the presence of anxious and depressive symptoms(r=0.43; p<0.001). The style of coping most adopted was religion, most prevalent, followed by focus on the problem and social support. The mode of emotion-based coping was positively correlated with the presence of anxious and depressive symptoms (r=0.41; p<0.001). The study results demonstrate the importance of assessing the presence and interference of emotional factors during hospitalization.
