VASCONCELOS-RAPOSO, José; TEIXEIRA, Carla; LIMA, Ana  y  MONTEIRO, Inês. Physical activity and parental educational styles. Psic., Saúde & Doenças [online]. 2015, vol.16, n.2, pp.129-147. ISSN 1645-0086.  https://doi.org/10.15309/15psd160201.

This study was conducted in order to determine the relationship between gender, age and physical activity, outside the school context, according to parenting styles and study attitudes and behaviors. The sample consisted of 272 students (101 girls and 171 boys) of a school from northern Portugal, aged between 13 and 21 years old (M = 15.66, SD = 1.71). For the purposes of the present studt the Questionário de Estilos Educativos Parentais (QEEP) was used. Results showed that adolescents perceived their parents as being more responsive and less demanding. Furthermore, boys and girls perceived parenting styles in the same way, and younger teens (between 13 and 14 years old) perceived their parents as being more responsive and less demanding. Among physically active and inactive students there were no differences in perceived parenting styles. However, when we analyze the combined effect of sex and physical activity, it was found that activie boys and inactive girls perceived their parents as more demanding than responsive. We can conclude that parents tend to adopt a more responsive and less demanding style, there is a greater parental involvement with younger adolescents than older ones. Moreover, parents tend to educate boys and girls in the same way, whether they are Physicalle active or inactive.

Palabras clave : adolescents; parenting style; physical activity.
