Abstract
AFONSO, Andreia Castro and SILVA, Isabel. Oral health-related quality of life and associated variables: integrative review. Psic., Saúde & Doenças [online]. 2015, vol.16, n.3, pp.311-330. ISSN 1645-0086.
As an integral part of general health, oral health influences and is influenced by several factors, posing as one of the more challenging public health problems due to its multidimensionality as well as individual and social impact. This integrative literature review aims to gather and analyze original full text free publications, to identify and analyze the association between sociodemographic, behavioral and clinical variables, and Oral Health-Related Quality of Life (OHRQoL) assessed using the Oral Health Impact Profile-14 (OHIP-14). The electronic databases consulted were PubMed/National Library of Medicine, SciELO and B-ON, with the use of the descriptors: oral health-related quality of life, OHIP-14, adults. Recommendations proposed in Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guide were adopted. This integrative reviews includes 17 publications that consist mainly on observational studies and a quasi-experimental study, published between 2006 and 2013. The analyzed studies suggest that OHRQoL is associated with clinical variables, such as number of decayed or missing teeth, denture, xerostomia or severity of periodontal disease. Sociodemographic factors such as age, lower education and unmarried or widowed marital status, and behavioral variables, such as dietary and oral hygiene habits, bad habits and access to health services, emerge as moderator variables affecting the intensity of the relationship between clinical variables and OHRQoL. Results show a direct relationship between autoperceção general or oral health, need to use / replace dentures, in which individuals with negative perceptions have clinical indicators of greater severity.
