SANTO, Caren et al. The anchoring process in the social representation of evangelical leaders on AIDS. Psic., Saúde & Doenças [online]. 2019, vol.20, n.3, pp.778-787. ISSN 1645-0086.  https://doi.org/10.15309/19psd200317.

The aim of this study was to analyze the social representations of evangelical Pentecostal religious leaders about HIV/AIDS, in their interface with the representational constructions on sin and God. This is a qualitative and descriptive study based on the Theory of Social Representations in its procedural approach, including the anchoring process. As scenarios, three Pentecostal evangelical churches of the same denomination were chosen at random. The data were collected through interviews with 30 leaders of such religious denominations, in which the thematic-categorial content analysis was used. The anchoring of AIDS to religious leaders is centered on the idea of sin, especially when they represent the syndrome with divine punishment and disobedience to the laws of God. The social representation of AIDS presents itself as negative as a consequence of the sin committed, especially with regard to sexual practices contrary to the divine laws present in the Bible. It’s concluded that the negative evaluation of AIDS and the images and attitudes in reference to the syndrome and people living with the HIV virus, have roots in hegemonic representations of the syndrome at the beginning of the epidemic.

Palavras-chave : Aids; social representations; religion and medicine; nursing in collective health.
